A Honda car owner in Los Angeles, CA, contacted Kardo Locksmith for car key replacement. Their car key fob had been acting up recently, so they decided to replace it. Fortunately, we had a replacement car key in stock that was compatible with the model of their car. As the law requires, our locksmith requested documentation verifying ownership before beginning the car key programming procedure. After completing the programming process, we tested the key fob, which worked as expected when we clicked the buttons. The car owner was pleased because a car key replacement from the dealership would have cost him much more than our car locksmith service.

One of the most convenient features of modern cars is the key fob. With a key fob, you can start the engine, unlock the doors, and even open the trunk without leaving your seat. But what happens when your key fob starts to malfunction? Can you program it yourself, or do you need to take it to a professional

Understanding the Key Fob System

The modern key fob is a sophisticated device that enhances security in two important ways: starting the car and controlling entry into the vehicle. RF-based key fobs from earlier generations were less reliable and simpler to hack. In contrast, more recent infrared-based systems needed the operator to point the remote directly at the target vehicle. The modern key fob uses synchronized code generation between the fob and the vehicle's receiver, making it much more secure.

Most key fobs can be easily reprogrammed, despite their complex functioning mechanism. Transponder technology, for instance, uses code transmissions between the electronic key and the frequency receiver inside the vehicle. As a result, a corresponding radio frequency will be emitted when a button is pressed on the fob, enabling a specific function.

Reprogramming a Car Key Fob

Step 1: Change the Batteries in the Key Fob

Before reprogramming your key fob, checking that the batteries are not drained is important. Replacing the batteries before beginning the reprogramming process will result in faster and more efficient frequency transmissions. Fortunately, key fob batteries are inexpensive and easy to replace.

Step 2: Set the Ignition Key to the "On" Position

Sit in the driver's seat and make sure all doors are closed. No doors must be open during the configuration process, as this can disrupt it. You will have to turn the key to the ON position to power your vehicle's electrical system, including the key fob. Ensure the ignition is not on radio mode, as this can cause disruptions with your fob. Turn on the ignition without starting the engine.

Step 3: Press and Hold the Remote Lock Button Key

To reconfigure your vehicle's keyless ignition:

1) Begin by turning the ignition to the ON position.

2) Turn the ignition back to OFF after pressing and holding the lock button on your fob.

3) Repeat this process three times, ending with the ignition in the OFF position. It will send an electronic signal to your vehicle's control box, indicating that the owner's key is in the ignition.

The control unit will save your fob and key information as part of the reconfiguration process.

Step 4: Listen for a Locking Sound

To reprogram your car's remote key fob, start by pressing the lock button on the fob. You should hear a lock sound; this indicates that you have successfully entered programming mode. You will likely need to repeat this step several times before hearing the lock sound. Once you have entered programming mode, press the lock button within five seconds to complete the programming process.

Step 5: Turn Off the ignition

When you have finished reconfiguring your fobs, remember to end the programming process by turning off the ignition in your car. Again, it is important to be quick and efficient with all the steps, including this one. Press the lock button on the fob a few seconds after turning your vehicle off, and remove the ignition key immediately. Then, go outside the car and test your key fob.
